Malayalam Veteran Actor Bharat Gopi (71) died in shooting0 comments
It is difficult for me to write about Malayalam veteran actor Bharat Gopi, who died in Thiruvananthapuram on January 29. The 71-year-old actor was admitted to a private hospital two days ago, after he suffered a heart attack while on a shooting location in Alappuzha district, hospital sources said.
I knew Gopi at a personal level, as a person who worked for the Kerala [Images] State Electricity Board, where my father was an engineer. Just like to him, I was always my father's daughter, not a journalist who went to interview him later.
I had the good fortune to watch Gopi perform on stage. I was a young girl then, and yet the performance was mesmerising. He was not a professional actor then; his love was stage and he associated himself with the great stage directors like C N Sreekantan Nair, Kavalam Narayana Paniker and G Sankara Pillai. From theatre, his interest turned to cinema through the Chitraleka film society, started by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. After he became a well known actor, he would say, "It was not glamour or money that drew me to theatre and cinema but a passion for both the art forms." His initiation into films was through a very minute role in Adoor's first film, Swayamvaram. He was there only for a couple of minutes but the impact of his frustrated face was so strong that he was immediately noticed. The Guardian carried a story on him under the title The face of unemployment. He was an unemployed youth in the film. Gopi played the lead role in Adoor's next film Kodiyettam in 1977. He played a moron, who wanders around temples and festivals without caring about his own home, wife or other duties. That was his second film, and he won the National Award --called Bharat award in those days -- for best actor. That was when he became Bharat Gopi. In no time, he became an essential part of 'art' films made by people like Adoor Gopalakrishnan and the late G Aravindan, and also of the 'middle cinema' patronised by the late Padmarajan and Bharatan, and K G George. He also acted in Mani Kaul's Satah Se Udta aadmi and Govind Nihalani's Aghat. When filmgoers were ready to slot him as an art film actor, he started appearing in commercial films too. Imagine a thin, balding man as the hero! But he eclipsed even a handsome actor like Mammootty in K.G.George's Yavanika. Even today, people talk about Gopi the tabla player of Yavanika more than Mammootty the police officer. He was a meticulous performer. To play the tabla player in Yavanika, he learnt the instrument. He believed that before facing the camera, an actor should know what he is going to perform. "I need the full script, only then I will be able to do full justice to the role," he had said. "The character does not go inside me, I go inside the character. The character is formless, unseen, in front of me, and I enter the outline drawn by me. If an actor takes the character inside him, what you see will be the actor and not the character." No wonder he began collecting awards then; he was the character in all his films and not Bharat Gopi, the actor. The Kerala state award for the best actor went to him four times. He won an honour at the 30th Asia Pacific Film Festival for his performance as an English professor in Bharatan's Kaattathe Kilikoodu. A retrospective of his films was organised at Paris by the French government, an honour accorded to select artistes like Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi [Images] at that time. Everything was going right for Bharat Gopi but destiny had other plans for him. On February 1986, he collapsed on the sets and ended up paralysed on one side. A brilliant career came to an end in that one moment. When I met him after the mishap, he was terribly angry with the cruel fate, angry with the film world that did not bother to help when he was down and out. Slowly, he came back to life and went on to direct Ulsavapittennu with Mohanlal in the lead. The film did good business. His second film, partly autobiographical, Yamanam, about a physically handicapped person won him a national award. He was awarded the Padmashree in 1991. In 1994, his book Abhinayam Anubhavam (Acting, Expereince) won the national award for the best book on cinema. When I met him after he won the award, he was very excited. He told me, "Even when I got the national award for best actor, I was not so happy. At that time, I was more committed towards the cinema movement, individual achievements that it did not matter to me much." The last film I saw of him was Sathyan Anhikad's Rasathantram. He played Mohanlal's father. One can only think of what he told me once, years after he was paralysed, "I am a believer in fate, in destiny. I believe everything happens because it is already ordained by destiny. I attribute all that has happened to me, the gains and losses, as the working of my fate. It was only because of this outlook that I could get over the trauma of this illness." Actors like Gopi are born only once in a lifetime. Because of the illness, his potential was never utilised fully. It is our misfortune. Telegu actor Rajasekhar and his family were attacked by superstar Chiranjeevi fans0 commentsHyderabad: Telugu actor Rajasekhar received minor injuries on Monday when his car was attacked allegedly by Chiranjeevi’s fans. The fans were angry over Rajasekhar remarks at Bhimavaram on Sunday that Chiranjeevi lacked political experience and that he would not join the political party if the superstar floats one. The fans demanded an apology from Rajasekhar for his comments. The attack took place at Panjagutta when Rajasekhar was returning home from Bhimavaram in West Godavari district. The actor, his wife Jeevita and their two teenaged daughters received minor injuries and the windowpane of the car was smashed in the assault. The family was rushed to a super-speciality hospital soon after the incident. Talking to reporters, the actor said he had the freedom to air his views.
CLASH OF THE TITANS: Fans of Chiranjeevi allegedly attacked actor Rajasekhar and his family members. "Is this democracy? Is it wrong to say that Chiranjeevi has no political experience? Can't I express my opinion in a democracy?" asked Rajasekhar, as he spoke to reporters after the incident. "Mr. Chiranjeevi. Is this what you wanted? This is not leadership. If you want to become a leader come in the public. You can't become a leader through violence," he added. Rajasekhar is likely to file a police complaint over the attack. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Sex, Shah Rukh or Story: What makes a movie work?0 commentsWould Taare Zameen Par have had the same response if it did not have Aamir Khan? Or Chak De have done as well without Shah Rukh Khan? Would Saawariya have worked if it had Hrithik Roshan instead? The answer to the last question at least is a resounding no, Saawariya was a bad film and even all the Khans put together couldn’t have saved it. Having said that, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry, Metro, Johnny Ghaddar, Gangster… are just some of the movies that had no big star attraction and yet won over the crowds as well as the critics. Does it mean that Bollywood is slowly getting over its ‘star power’ fixation? That finally content will be the ultimate king and does it mean more good cinema in 2008? And the nominees are… The list of nominees for one of the earliest movie awards – Star Screen Awards – is already out. Chosen on the recommendations made my industry insiders, the top contenders are Taare Zameen Par (17 nominations), Metro (15), Guru (14) and Chak De (12)…
SEX SELLS OR SRK? Seems like neither as viewers lap up different fare from Bollywood. In a year that saw many sequels and remakes – Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag and Umrao Jaan being the biggest duds – the viewer appreciated fresh content. With added technical improvements and improved production values, 2007 saw some unlikely movies making it big while run-of-the-mill, big budget flicks brilliantly bombed at the box office. At the same time, SRK’s stick-to-the-formula Om Shanti Om brought in the customer and the cash as well… So what really is working with the viewer? And again, would a Taare and Chak De have pulled in the people without the star attraction of Aamir and SRK respectively? “Metro didn’t have any star cast so to speak and has got 15 nominations, that’s three more than Chak De… Even Khosla Ka Ghosla and Bheja Fry, which did not have any star content performed well at the box office. It proves that content is still king in a way,” points out Ram Mirchandani, executive vice president, UTV Motion Pictures, the distributors for all three movies. here is reason why Mirchandani and UTV will sing the low-budget-no-star-cast tune. The company had earlier burnt its fingers with the big budget Ashutosh Gowatrikar directed Swades, which incidentally starred Shah Rukh Khan. Despite having both the content and the star, Swades did not do well in India. So did content fail there, or SRK, and what really ensures a movie will do well? “While even so-called big films need to be a combination of factors, you cannot completely rule out the star power aspect,” feels Raj Malik, AVP India theatrical distribution, Eros Multimedia, the guys who gave us Om Shanti Om. “If a Bhool Bhulaiya and Hey Baby work, Akshay Kumar is definitely responsible for it. For Taare, OSO, Chak De, Aamir and SRK have huge roles to play,” he adds. How about some role playing? While both Malik and Mirchandani agree that Bollywood is slowly getting fresh, different, original content, both say that the importance of ‘stars’ cannot be downplayed, particularly in today’s multiplex age. The advent of multiplexes has caused some drastic changes in the way movies are marketed and distributed in the country. For one, the time a movie ‘stays’ in the theatre has reduced. With more movies releasing every Friday, the viewer has more choice and the movie has more competition too. A movie’s box office performance is largely dependent on its opening weekend… Once a movie sees a good initial three days, it’s over to content/ packaging to take it further. “While there are no doubts that a Taare is a brilliant film, I do wonder if a Vinay Pathak in the lead role would have pulled in as many people on the opening weekend,” feels Mirchandani. “Aamir and his name ensured that people came in for the weekend and then word-of-mouth ensured that Taare would have people coming in on Mondays as well,” he adds. Point to be noted: While Aamir might have pulled in the crowds, only good content can ensure good word-of-mouth. And when it comes to weekend movie politics, it’s mostly about star power and how well that power is marketed. Cool creatives, cheeky taglines, sleekly cut promos, hot posters, Internet viral marketing, making-of-the-movie DVDS, interviews with the star cast… Movie marketing is breaking new grounds everyday and creating a movie-recall amongst the consumers. As Malik points out, “The consumer has a lot of choice today when it comes to watching a movie, if you’ve missed it in the hall you can get it on home video or satellite. In such a scenario, it’s marketing – and the star attraction – that ensures viewer urgency reaches a point where they rush in to see a film on the first day, first show itself.” The rest of course, depends on your content and how it is packaged. With stars trying out new things, quality improving everyday and production values becoming better, Bollywood is perhaps getting better at marrying the commercial formula with the critical acclaim. A big movie star will still draw the crowds, but if the viewer has to be retained, the content better rock. As Mirchandani puts it, “Bottom line is: If it’s good content, it will make it to the BO.” Donate Food for Needy Indians: Akshay Kumar is the Rajinikanth of Bollywood is fast becoming a guaranteed hit machine0 commentsOur inhouse movie guru Rajeev Masand calls him the 'man with the Midas touch'; any movie that Akshay Kumar appeared in seemed to rake in the moolah. Akshay churned out the maximum hits last year and is now charging more than Rs 200 million (Rs 20 crore) for a film. However, trade analysts feel despite his achievements and consistency, he is far behind Shah Rukh Khan in the race for superstardom.
BOLLYWOOD'S RAJINIKANTH? Akshay Kumar is fast becoming a guaranteed hit machine. "Akshay has given three hits last year, but he hasn't superseded Shah Rukh. As far as popularity and collections are concerned, Akshay has come a long way, but Shah Rukh is phenomenal. His Om Shanti Om has touched the Rs 900-million mark," says Vikas Mohan, editor of trade magazine Supercinema. But Akshay is not competing with Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan any longer. After the success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, trade pundits are comparing him with southern star Rajinikanth. Bhool Bhulaiyaa is actually as big a hit as Rajni's Chandramukhi, from which it was inspired. ---- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Video : Padma Vibhushan for Sachin Tendulkar , first cricketer to be conferred. Mumbai: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is difficult to pin down for an interview; but is always in the news for one reason or another. Here she is, in an interview with entertainment editor of CNN-IBN, Rajeev Masand.
Rajeev Masand: How would you describe the last one year? Approximately this time, last year, Guru had just released and it gave good reviews to the box office and your engagement was announced soon after and there was this world wind of the marriage, lots of travelling, and getting to know the family. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: It is a very special time. I will cherish 2007 for multiple reasons, more obviously so because Abhishek and I got married and I am very thankful to god. I feel blessed. It is beautiful and super special. Rajeev Masand: Its been more than a year since your last Hindi film was released and hence you can understand the excitement around your next release, which is Jodha Akbar, which is just a few weeks away from release. What was it about the story that drew you, when it was first offered to you? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: I think it was the same intrigue and curiosity which you would have. The very obvious reason that this is a love story, which is untold. It has not been documented or registered or recorded. And it was so wonderful of Ashutosh that he was telling a story of a boy and a girl or be it an emperor and a princess in such a simple way. At the end of the day, in that era and time, they came together. Although it purely looked like a political move and alliance, it was, however, a most beautiful relationship of a marriage. Rajeev Masand: Was it a very physically exhausting film to make? Apart from being a love story, there is a fair amount of action that you are doing in it. Did the training in Last Legion help? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Yes. However, due to the time constraint during Last Legion, I was unable to join them weeks in advance for heavy training. But the fight masters there pointed out that because I had dancing in my training background and if enjoyed it so much, that it was easy for me to take to the choreography of action and I seemed to enjoy that as much. I love action and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I wish Ashutosh gave me more opportunity for sword fighting. But we had to remain true to the script. I confess I love action. Rajeev Masand: You just completed Sarkar Raj with your husband and father-in-law. Having seen Sarkar, and knowing Gopal verma, everyone is sure that it will be an interesting story. How do you sift through so many offers? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Ram Gopal Verma is very fascinating and has a fantastic mind and you have to credit the guy for giving his audience a lot of variety over the years. He brought that with such fervour and we as an audience enjoyed it. He as a director is ready to go with his film tomorrow and somehow I never had tomorrow at hand. We never made it with the dates but I am glad I did make it this time and I enjoyed working with him. I enjoyed Sarkar as an audience and I thoroughly love the movie and I am sure you will back me on that. It was thus an easy yes and a very easy yes to be with the family. However, when the camera rolls, we are professionals delivering what the director needs and call a cut and we are family again. That’s the way it has been and it is always incredible working with the powerhouse of talent. And I am not biased here. Rajeev Masand: You have been shooting for Pink Panther 2. I am guessing that you grew up on the original Pink Panther films. So was it fun? Did you pinch yourself and say you are doing pink panther? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Yes, exactly! It brings a smile to your face. This was exactly my reaction. It is Pink Panther! That was exactly my reaction. It just fit in with the time and schedule. When I asked Abhishek, he said, ‘It’s Pink Panther, just do it’. It is a fun family film. We love Steve Martin’s cinema. He has always entertained families, and has a unique comic timing and it was fun working with him and the team. I thought it was an awesome idea for him to cast people from different parts of the world and make an universally comic film. Rajeev Masand: Shankar, the director of Shivaji has revealed that you are the heroine of his new film Robot opposite Rajinikanth. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: They are super entertainers independently and together. I am saying independently because Shankar has been really sweet before Jeans and even after that. He has always asked me for his various projects but due to time and schedule, I could never come around making it happen as I already had other commitments. Rajini sir and Shankar are pure creative people. Saying no can and could be such an issue. Recently Shankar did approach me and narrated the script. But we could still work it out. I am still working on my dates. But if he is confirmed it then it is cool. It means we will be on board and will work it out. Rajeev Masand: It has also been said that you have been signed at a price that is the highest ever price paid to an actor in a Rajinikanth film. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: It is not that as much as speculation and a lot more chattier like there is a dearth of it anyways. I don’t know how to react to all this. Rajeev Masand: Was it important for you to have an interesting role as heroines can get sidelined in a Rajinikanth film? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: I don’t think that is a fair perception to have. The fact remains that Rajini sir is just super fascinating and intriguing to his audience. So it is not the question of a director attempting to sideline any actor or character on screen. But you can’t help but be fascinated by this persona called Rajinikanth sir and his audience just truly loves him. He is just such a wonderful human being. I am just so glad, privileged and honoured to be working with him. Rajeev Masand: The family is going to be in Barabanki shortly to announce the Aishwarya Rai school for girls, which is a very noble gesture. Are you going to play a significant role in that? Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: I am very humbled by the commitment that the family has made and I so privileged to belong to a family that made a commitment a year ago and is keeping to its word and is realising the commitment very soon. You have to wait for the details of date and nomenclature. But more than anything else, it is the whole thought and idea and it is straight from the heart. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: India: Why do we celebrate Republic Day0 commentsHow many of us know the importance of republic day? The Republic Day of India is to mark the transition of India from a British Dominion to a republic on January 26, 1950 and the adoption of the Constitution of India. It is one of the three national holidays in India. This is not to be confused with the Independence Day on August 15th. HistoryAlthough India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, the Constitution of India came into effect only on January 26, 1950. During the transition period from 1947 to 1950, King George VI was the head of country. C. Rajagopalachari served as the Governor-General of India during this period. Following January 26, 1950, Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of India.Celebrations To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, New Delhi, from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's Palace), along the Rajpath, past India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort. The different regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force march past in all their finery and official decorations. The President of India who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute. The parade also includes vibrant displays and floats and traditionally ends with a flypast by Indian Air Force jets. Celebrations, though on a much smaller scale, are also held in state capitals, where the governor of the state unfurls the national flag. If the Governor of the state is unwell, or is unavailable for some reason, the Chief Minister of the state assumes the honor of unfurling the National Flag of India. India was then a federated nation and a union of states. More than 275 principalities had to be merged into new states and after merging these princely states, India became a truly sovereign state. On this day, 26th Jan a date of symbolic importance as it was on January 26, 1930, that the Congress Party had first issued the call for complete independence from Britain. Thus 26th January is one of the most important days in the Indian history. Indeed our past glory has come back after we gained independence and India has once again become a land of hope and immense possibilities, as we have risen like the phoenix, the symbol of death and resurrection, showing our civilized strength and a will to prove our Bhagavad Gita’s message -- that wherever there is dharma (righteousness), there is victory -- true. The story of India's recent progress is a saga of peoples' power, determination and a will to move ahead as enshrined in our constitution a constitution, which perhaps is the longest written document of any independent nation in the world. The Republic Day Parade is an annual military and cultural parade held in the Indian Capital of New Delhi on 26 January, the Republic Day of India. Republic Day is celebrated with the hoisting of the national flag, and parades by the armed forces and school children all over the country. The largest, and most important, of these parades takes place in New Delhi, and the phrase "Republic Day Parade" generally refers to the parade in New Delhi.India hosts another head of state as the chief guest on this day. The strategic importance of any nation as associated by India can be easily attributed from this list.
--- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Aishwarya Rai signed in Shankar's ROBOT with Rajinikanth as her hero0 commentsAishwarya Rai has reportedly signed the prestigious Shankar film with Rajinikanth, tentatively called Robot. Our sources insist, the deal was officially signed yesterday afternoon, around 3.30 pm. “The contract was sent to Janak (the Bachchan bungalow in suburban Mumbai) for the Bachchans’ approval, and it was duly signed,” says our source. But that’s not all. Aishwarya Rai is allegedly charging a whopping Rs 1.5 cr for the film, which was initially meant to be a SRK and Deepika Padukone starrer. The amount, needless to say, will be some sort of a landmark, considering no Rajini heroine has ever commanded such an astronomical fee so far. Shriya Saran was allegedly paid Rs 30 lakh for Sivaji. ![]() Meanwhile, there seems to be some controversy around the title of this film. Well, we all know the deal with tax exemption on movies with Tamil titles. So if you were wondering if Shankar was going to stick with Robot and incur the extra expense, you were wrong. The director has announced that Robot will soon be given a different name – a Tamil name at that. Since the movie is budgeted at Rs 120 crores, it makes absolute sense to cut these extra costs. Shankar has also mentioned that this movie of his, being a sci-fi adventure, will depend largely on the visual effects, which may require a lot of time. But for Rajini fans, time won’t be an issue because Kuselan will be out later this year to keep them well entertained. Shooting for Kuselan will start in February and the movie will hit screens post-June. Shooting for Robot will commence in July and the movie will hit the theatres, Well, let’s wait and watch. Aishwarya signs Robot for Rs.1.5 Cr. remuneration As it was stated that Shankar is in Mumbai describing story of Robot to Aiswarya Rai, finally he could succeed in convincing her in rendering her services for the movie as heroine. She has nodded to act in this prestigious project, she happens to be Miss World and wife of Abhishek Bachan going to star for Rs.100 Cr. budget movie. Even though she got a couple of film offers after her debut, she only signed one Malayalam film and a Tamil film titled Dhik Dhik which is yet to be released. Have an uneventful life? Go work out with Sherlyn Chopra. For all you guys who are happily committed, stay away or you'll end up single again!
We are talking about an 'outrageous' person. If you are still cracking your head to figure out who we are talking about, here's the story. Sherlyn Chopra has been banned from working out at public gyms. Yup! She was recently kicked out from two suburban gyms in Mumbai. Recently while she was busy working out in skimpy clothes (read bikini), two trainers got into a fight over who gets to train her personally. So, to avoid things from going out-of-hand to out-of-mind, the manager of the gym told her to pack up and leave. Sherlyn decided to move to another gym, but well, to face the very same problem! But if the gym birdie is to be believed, Sherlyn doesn't think she's doing anything wrong or out of the blue at all. In fact, she even believes that her 'dressing sense' is normal.Normal, level-headed people walk around the town in bikinis and sometimes even naked. It's a perfectly normal thing, you know? Anyways, just to cover up (of whatever was left) and avoid police trouble, she went home and decided to work out from there until someone was willing to take her back into their gym. With her upcoming album Dard, she just cannot afford to go out of shape. In fact, she even believes that her 'dressing sense' is normal. Normal, level-headed people walk around the town in bikinis and sometimes even naked. It's a perfectly normal thing, you know? Anyways, just to cover up (of whatever was left) and avoid police trouble, she went home and decided to work out from there until someone was willing to take her back into their gym. With her upcoming album Dard, she just cannot afford to go out of shape.
----- It looks as if it is becoming more and more difficult for actresses to wear clothes these days, especially when they're out in public. Shreya issued her apologies for dressing in over-exposing clothes. Trisha is more careful now about her dresses too. But a Bollywood glamorous actress found herself in big trouble when two of the most famous gyms in Mumbai banned her and canceled her membership. The actress in question is Sherlin Chopra. You might remember her as the one who isn't unable to make her mind up about her onscreen name. She keeps constantly shifting between Mona and Sherlin. She used to be a regular member of one of Mumbai's best gyms. But the costumes that she wore used to be so tight that men used to fight with each other to ogle at her. Things went so out of control once that two men ended up getting into a fist-fight with each other and had to be rushed to the hospital. The gym authorities canceled her membership. Sherlin soon joined another gym. The same story took place in the new gym too. Sherlin complains that there is nothing indecent about the clothes that she wears. "So many women go about walking in public places with bikini suits, why is everybody making a huge issue about my dresses?" she asks. She has now decided to stay away from gyms for a while. ----- -- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Shriya's dress contraversy, what was that attire ? See the picture now !!1 comments
Here is the beginning of my post. Looks like her glamorous outfit in the ‘Sivaji’ silver jubilee function has landed actress Shriya Saran in problem. Shriya wore a offwhite dress which would have looked ultra sexy in a movie but only got her into trouble at the function to celebrate 200 days of Superstar Rajinikanth’s Shivaji, at University of Madras, where Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was the chief guest
Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) has lodged a complaint against the actress and sought police intervention to take legal action. Police has formally accepted the complaint. ![]()
In respose to this the actress has sent an apology letter to the Chennai Police and the Chief Minister. In her apology letter she has said that she was coming from Istanbul in Turkey, where she was shooting for the Hindi film Mission Istanbul, to attend the function, she had no time to change her dress. However sources say that Shriya went in that dress to impress Shankar and Rajini to consider her again for Robot. Well Shriya…Hope it pays off!! --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Another Indian PhD Student was shot dead in USA0 comments WASHINGTON: Yet another Indian doctoral student has been shot dead - the third in a month - on a US university campus, raising questions about the safety of the American university environment. The bullet-riddled body of 29-year old Abhijit Mahato was found inside his Anderson Street apartment in North Carolina's Duke University on Friday, nearly a month to the day after two other Indian PhD students were killed execution-style at Louisiana State University. Police are still investigating the cause and motive for Mahato's killing, even as the December 17 LSU murders are yet to be solved.
Mahato, originally from Kolkata and Tatanagar, India, was studying for an engineering doctorate degree focused on computational mechanics at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, university officials said. He was in his second year. Earlier, he had earned his mechanical engineering degree from Jadavpur University in 2001 and an M.Tech from the Indian Institute for Technology (IIT) in Kanpur in 2004. Before coming to Duke, Mahato worked for two years for the GE Global Research Center in Bangalore, where he focused on finite element analysis, a computer-simulation technique used in engineering. The experience prepared him well for his graduate work, according to Mahato's adviser, engineering professor Tod Laursen. "We were working together on an industry-funded research project and Abhijit's prior industry experience helped him develop close working relationships with our partner," Laursen said. "He understood their needs as a business and was a pleasure to work with." Even as the incident sent shock waves among the huge Indian student community in the US – the biggest from any foreign country, Duke officials tried to reassure the students. Some 80,000 students come to the US each year for studies and the total Indian student population in the US is said to be over 250,000 at any given time. Duke is one of the biggest campuses in the US with one of the racially and ethnically diverse student population (from 117 countries) including a large contingent from India. The University's Pratt School of Engineering is particularly popular among Indian students. On a newly constructed web page on the school site, Mahato described himself as the "the newest person to join DUKE Computational Mechanics Lab ((DCML)" and said he is "interested in nonlinear continuum mechanics problems and developing numerical methods for them...working on large deformation two body contact problems." Larry Moneta, Duke's vice president for student affairs, said the university has begun reaching out to Mahato's friends and to his family in India, as well as to Indian and other international students on campus. It is offering counselling services and has begun considering appropriate ways of commemorating Mahato's life. "This is a tragic circumstance, and we are doing everything possible to assist those who may be affected by it," Moneta said in a statement issued by the university. In the engineering department, Laursen met with his lab team to talk about Mahato, whom he described as intellectually curious, kind and outgoing. "He made friends very easily and always had a smile on his face," Laursen said. "Our research team was particularly close to Abhijit. He was very well read in both poetry and literature, and enjoyed conversation with others about what they were reading." Mahato said on his webpage that his "upbringing was in Kolkata; the City of Joy, the city of intellectuals, and much much more." --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Celebration moments of India wins Australia in Perth - Chak Diya India - Video0 commentsIndia once again halted a record Australian winning streak with a famous 72-run victory in the third Test at the WACA ground in Perth on Saturday. Set 413 to win an unprecedented 17th Test in succession, Australia was dismissed for 340 on the fourth day. Although several batsmen scored, the home side never really threatened to pull off what needed to be the second biggest run chase in 131 years of Test cricket. Australia's previous Test defeat was against England during its ill-fated Ashes campaign in August, 2005, at Trent Bridge. Despite Saturday's victory, India still trails 2-1 in the four-Test series and Australia has retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the final Test to be played in Adelaide starting Thursday. India captain Anil Kumble said his side had arrived in Perth with a belief they could win the last two Tests. "We came here with the attitude to win a series in Australia, but we can only level the series," he said. "That was the talk before this Test match and I'm delighted we've been able to win this Test. We will take this confidence to Adelaide and are looking forward to winning that and levelling the series. "It's important that we take this momentum forward and ensure that we level the series. That will be the best result after what happened in the first two Test matches." With Australian pair Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist fighting to keep the chase alive, an inventive piece of captaincy by Kumble ensured India would win its first ever Test at the WACA ground. Kumble's surprise decision to throw the ball to part-time spinner Virender Sehwag just before tea proved masterful, as he claimed two crucial wickets in his first eight balls. The recalled opener broke the threatening sixth-wicket partnership between Gilchrist and Clarke by bowling the former around his legs with just his third ball. It ended a 50-run stand between the pair, with the dangerous Gilchrist back in the pavilion for 15. In his next over, Sehwag (2 for 24) had Brett Lee caught at mid-off by VVS Laxman for a duck as Australia slumped to 7 for 229. Any hope the Australians had was extinguished when an advancing Clarke was beaten by Kumble and stumped by Mahendra Singh Dhoni for 81. Clarke was at the crease for 160 minutes and faced 134 balls, hitting eight fours, but his departure left Australia on the brink of defeat at 8 for 253, needing 160 runs more. Late flurryThere was a late flurry from tailenders Mitchell Johnson, who was bowled by a Kumble no-ball and then dropped twice as he lashed out on his way to an unbeaten 50, and Stuart Clark. However, man-of-the-match Irfan Pathan (3 for 54) capped a fine return to Test cricket when he had Clark caught behind for 32 to end an entertaining 73-run partnership in 55 minutes consisting almost entirely of leg-side slogs. When RP Singh (2 for 95) clean bowled number 11 Shaun Tait for 4, the Indians had recorded one of their best wins in recent years and it sparked boisterous celebrations. The home side initially made steady early progress after resuming at 2 for 65, but young paceman Ishant Sharma claimed the prized wicket of Australia captain Ricky Ponting for 45, caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip, to end a 74-run stand with Hussey. It was due reward for the emerging Sharma, who bowled an impressive nine-over spell. He used his height to gain good bounce and troubled Ponting consistently as he bowled high pace off cutters that continually jagged back into the batsman. RP Singh then trapped Hussey leg before for 46 before Symonds was unlucky to fall in the same manner off an inside edge for 12, leaving Australia 5 for 177 and struggling. India also broke Australia's previous record 16-Test winning streak when it notched a memorable victory in Kolkata in 2001. Australia had not lost a home Test since December 2003 - also against India in Adelaide - and was last beaten at the WACA ground by the West Indies in 1996/97. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Jodha Akbar Music Review and songs lyrics0 commentsAlas! The wait comes to an end. The music of the most awaited release of the year ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai is out with splendor and perfection. Director Ashutosh and music director A.R. Rahman have had excellent partnership and produced hit music earlier. And with Jodhaa Akbar, the duo has delivered exceptional scores to resonate in your ears for years to come. Composed by music maestro A.R.Rahman, Jodhaa Akbar’s music is magical, spectacular, bracing, pleasant and different from the tunes and beats of the contemporary style of music. The tracks are rustic, earthy and definitely pulsating. DIRECTOR : Ashutosh Gowariker CAST : Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Sonu Sood, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Suhasini Mulay, Raza Murad MUSIC DIRECTOR : A. R. RahmanLYRICIST: Javed Akhtar
The first track Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah starts off with roaring horns and booming drums as we are introduced to our emperor Akbar, his power and stature. With the incredible crisp arrangements of 12 different kinds of percussion instruments in the song, A.R has composed a masterpiece and the effect of the song is just wild. The singers Mohammad Aslam, Bony Chakravarty voice’s are just perfect for this score. A.R. Rahman is quiet simply at his best with this song. The heart-warming romantic track Jashn-e-bahaara is enticing, making you hit the repeat button several times. The slow but richly soothing melodious tunes of string variants and tabla just flows smoothly into your ears as if to ease your soul. Javed Ali’s tone of voice blends rightly with the tunes creating a most joyous effect on the ear! Pure unadulterated music - a winner! Khawaja Mere Khawja is a fabulous qawaali based song sung by the maestro himself. The tunes of harmonium is interwoven with that of the strings producing a sweet harmonic resonance and this coupled with the subdued voice of A.R. Rahman is enthralling. From praises for the emperor you are taken to the world of two lovers with In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein. Once again with the soothing tunes of strings interwoven with the beating of drums, the song is dipped in passion and is just breathtaking. Sonu Nigam renders another emotional track with Madhushree providing supporting vocals. The tunes, the voice and the chorus vary in energy with the proceedings and the final outcome is a stunning melody by A.R. This is the best romantic track that proudly tops the charts of JA. The final track Man Mohana sung by Bela Shende is yet another soft track with tunes like that of a bhajan. It’s is a situational track that might not be pleasing to all but even in this the blending of various instruments is just mind-blowing. The instrumentals are unique in its form. While Jashn-e-Bahaaraa (Instrumental) concentrates on the flute, Khwaja Mere Khwaja (Instrumental) highlights the oboe. A.R. Rahman is a master indeed. And how can one forget the lyricist Javed Aktar. The lyrics are very reflective, melodic and catchy. Just the right ingredient to ensure the music is a classic. Every track in the Jodha Akbar album is a Gem. Don’t miss it. SONGS LYRICS: ============ 1. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Bangalore Family Claims to be a serial killer0 commentsBangalore: Bangalore Police have arrested a 48-year-old real estate businessman, his wife and son in a murder case that is getting murky. The businessman, Chandrakant Sharma, now claims to have committed 20 other murders nearly 15 years ago in different towns of Maharashtra. Sharma, a real estate businessman in Bangalore since 1985, is now in police custody after being accused of murdering his landlord SV Raghavan, who was a pensioner. Police say his wife 43-year-old wife Harsha and 21-year-old son Monto were accomplices in the murder that took place seven days ago. But it's not just one murder case that has caught the police's attention, it's Sharma's past.
IN CUSTODY: Chandrakant Sharma (centre), his wife Harsha and son Monto were arrested in Bangalore. "He has made startling revelations saying he's committed 20 murders in Maharashtra. So a team is being sent to Maharashtra," Gopal Hosur, Joint Commissioner (Crime), says. Sharma claims he has killed people in Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Manmad and Aurangabad. "After you give chloroform there's no struggle. So it's easy to tie and shift the body," he claims. The police officials are, however, sceptical about many of Sharma's claims. "It could be that all of it is false. However it is also necessary to verify and find out since these murders are supposed to have taken place 10-15 years back," Hosur adds. "He says that he paid money to police in some cases and got away. Until we verify all this we have to take his statement with a pinch of salt," Alok Kumar, DCP (South), says. The police are also planning a lie-detector test on Sharma if needed and if the claims are proved to be correct, he would be the second suspected serial killer to be arrested in Karnataka within a month. In December last year, the police had arrested 43-year-old Mallika allegedly for killing six women by forcibly feeding them temple offerings laced with cyanide. She used to take their gold after killing them. ---- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Bollywood Hindi Actor Govinda Slaps a man - exclusive slapping video - Govinda's shows off fist of fury.1 comments
Bollywood actor Govinda showed off fists of fury on Wednesday afternoon when he slapped an alleged trespasser on the sets of his new film Money Hai To Honey Hai in Mumbai.
While addressing a press conference on the sets of the film the actor slapped the onlooker in full view of the cameras. However, Govinda said he had a good reason for his behaviour. “I had been noticing him for a long time and saw him misbehaving with other artists. When I questioned him he very nonchalantly said he is an outsider. So, then he should be outside,” Govinda said. According to the actor the person in question was aimlessly roaming on the sets and kept staring at the actor.
Govinda initially thought the person was a journalist but on further inquiry came to know that the person was just killing time and distracting him.
ANGRY YOUNG MAN: According to Govinda the person in question was aimlessly roaming on the sets.
Govinda requested the person to leave, but the man refused which led him to losing his temper and slapping the man. It is still not known how an intruder got into Filmistan Studio without permission. No police complaint was lodged. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: American Indian Girls are rocking in USA swim suit calendar 2008 - a special masala video0 comments
The Indian- American community tends to be fairly conservative in nature.
So, when Sexy South Asian girl’s calendar came out in 2007, it was a first for the community. The calendar sold about 22,000 copies. Now, the 2008 version of the calendar is out but it's creators decided on a new name for the 2008 version. Ten out of 12 models featured in the Desiclub.com’s Swimsuit Calendar 2008 are Indian-Americans with one each from Pakistan ad the Caribbean. The shoot took a week and the location was at the upscale resort area of the Hamptons in New York state. As for the changes that the calendar underwent, CEO, Desiclub. Com says, “It's a marketing strategy basically and it's also reputation. You have to be very careful about the wording that you use. And with the word 'sexy' in our title last year, the word 'sexy' automatically draws a certain type of attention. We want to keep it streamlined and classy. So we figured we should definitely title it something that's more mainstream.” For the 2007 calendar, about 20 girls applied to be part of the project but in 2008, the number rose fivefold.
INDIAN CONNECTION: Most models featured in the Desiclub.com’s Swimsuit Calendar 2008 are Indian-Americans.
Of the models included, some said "no" initially due to their apprehensions about appearing in swimsuits but then changed their minds. “I decided to do it ultimately because I was told it was going to be professionally done, it's not going to be racy, it's not going to be trashy in any way. I mean, after all, it is a South Asian calendar, I trusted it would be done in a professional and conservative manner and it was. I'm very proud of the product,” says Miss November, Bhumika Vyas. While they have received a lot of positive feedback, some of it has been surprising. “My parents are very supportive of everything I do but again this is a swimsuit calendar so I wasn't sure how they'd react. One day my father called me up after seeing the calendar and he said, "You look absolutely beautiful and I'm so proud of you and your mom's so proud of you. After that I was very surprised. I didn't think they'd react that way but then I knew it was the right decision,” says Miss April, Melanie Kannokada. The calendar is also selling well in India as people order it online. One of the reasons for that is free shipping. It may have undergone a name change but this calendar has sold as many copies in the first few days of this year as it sold in 2007 and its creators, desiclub.com, hope to sell about 80,000 copies in all. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Pictures: Rajinikanth's Sultan The Warrior wallpapers0 commentsRajinikanth's Sultan - The Warrior wallpaper Movie : Sultan - The Warrior Cast : Rajnikanth Music : A.R.Rahman Production : Adlabs and Ocher Studios Rajnikanth's forthcoming animated movie Sultan - The Warrior is directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth. Bhubaneswar: A lawyer's alleged gang rape in Bhubaneswar led to violent protest by the city's lawyers on Tuesday.
Women lawyers in Bhubaneswar went literally on a rampage on the streets. Tyres were set on fire, vehicles damaged, roads blocked and when that was not enough to meet their demands, one of them even attempted self immolation. The violence erupted after one of their colleagues was allegedly gang raped on Monday night in the Balipatna area. "If this can happen to lawyers, you can imagine how safe is the common man here. The police here is simply useless,” lawyer Prasanta Sahoo angrily said. The lawyers ended their protest only after the city police commissioner promised to arrest the accused within 24 hours, but it is a promise that could well be hard to keep. In the past month, more than six rape incidents have occurred in Bhubaneswar. Even the new police commission system which was implemented in Bhuabneswar in January does not seem to bring down the crime graph in the city. Commissioner Binay Kumar Behera, however, feels the police are doing the best they can, given their extremely limited numbers. "We are highly understaffed, but we still see that such crimes does not occur. I assure you we will give justice to the victim," promised Behera. Temple city Bhubaneswar is fast turning out into a crime capital while the police express their helplessness. On their part, the lawyers have threatened more violent protests if the alleged rapists are not brought to book at the earliest. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: School teacher attacks 7-yr-old boy with a knife, cuts his throat .0 comments

"She called me to her house and there she took out a knife from her purse. She told me there was a fly sitting on my throat and then she stabbed me," recalls the boy. The teacher, Sajeda — of the Chirag Primary School in Malegaon around 200 km from Mumbai — is behind bars. However, the police are still not clear about the motive of the crime. The school says that the teacher was suffering from mental disorder, but then the question remains — why did they employ such a teacher in the first place, risking the of their students? Shoaib's family says the school is refusing to take any responsibility and that the police is being lenient with the accused. Police Inspector Nasir Sheikh says that the teacher has been charged under Section 326 and Section 324 of the Indian Penal Code. But Shoaib's family is upset that the teacher has been charged not with kidnapping or attempt to kill, but merely attacking with a weapon.
UNPROVOKED ATTACKED: A school teacher in Malegaon near Mumbai attacked a seven-year-old student with a knife His uncle, Haroon Sharif says, "If it was the child of one of the policemen, then they would have definitely slapped Section 307 on the teacher."Is this a case of psychotic violence or is there some other deeper motive behind the crime? It might be some time before these answers come forth, but Shoaib is perhaps scarred for life. --- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Video: Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan make peace on the sets of 'Bhooth Naath' - cold war comes to an end . really?0 comments
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and legend Amitabh Bachchan have finally given up the cold war between them and made peace.
According to some Internet reports, Shah Rukh was shooting for a commercial on Set No. 2 at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai’s Bandra area, when he suddenly left the set and went over to to Set No. 3. According to a source, King Khan had noticed that Big B was shooting for Sujoy Ghosh’s Alladin and wanted to talk to him about a recent media hyped issue concerning the two. Says our source, “When Shah Rukh learnt that Amitji was shooting next door, he walked up to him and both embraced each other. It was surprising and the shoot came to a standstill for almost five minutes.” The reason behind this olive branch offering from Shah Rukh was the Amitabh Bachchan no-show at last week’s Smita Thackeray AIDS event. Bachchan refused to attend the event after hearing that Shah Rukh was already present at the venue. What are your thoughts on this… is the cold war over… was there a cold war between the two in the first place… will the two work together again in a big banner flick… is this good for Bollywood or would it have been more interesting if the ‘war continued… should Shah Rukh have done this and offered the hand of peace… leave your thoughts in the comments section below. What happened before ? How it started ? Shah Rukh and Amitabh war goes into politics Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are set to take their fight into the world of politics. Amitabh Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan is currently having a ball of a time, with hits after hits, and popularity reaching ultimate heights. Combine that with the free promotion you get being the son of a legend, and big banners like Dharma Productions, Ram Gopal Verma, and Yash Chopra, wanting to sign you up repeatedly. Abhishek Bachchan is surely going to be as big as Shah Rukh Khan, if not even bigger. The threat of Abhishek’s popularity is proving to be Shah Rukh Khan’s insecurity, with the King Khan worried that his status as being the King, is under threat from Big B’s only son. Where once he was the darling of directors, and anyone would give their arm or leg to work with him, he is now being kept at an arm’s length. He may still be the numero uno in Bollywood, and his popularity is still going storng, there is someone who is about to reach out for his throne. It is this exact threat from Abhishek Bachchan that has got Shah Rukh Khan worried. After all anyone, in any aspect of employement, would indeed get worried if someone was about brush them aside. A cold war has already begun, with both Amitabh and Shah Rukh distancing themselves from each other. No longer is the King Khan regarded as a ‘moo-bola’ son of the Bachchans, and no longer does Shah Rukh regard the Big B as the inspiration behind his achievement. Amitabh has managed to get Ram Gopal Verma on his side, with Ramu saying no to Shah Rukh Khan’s home production, and in return working with Amitabh and Abhishek in Sholay 2 and Sarkar 2. Aditya Chopra has signed Abhishek Bachchan in place of Shah Rukh Khan for his next direcorial, even though the Khan has given him most of his hits, a blow that Khan took very personally. And finally, Karan Johar is looking elsewhere for his next film, after the release of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Karan has praised the acting of Ajay Devgan and Shahid Kapur, so one assumes that his next film will include one of these two actors, if not both. What can Shah Rukh do to keep himself alive in this battle of Bollywood giants? Or the more correct question would be; “What can Sonia Gandhi do for Shah Rukh Khan?” It seems the war between the legends has to go into another area of battle, as the world of films is way too small for either of them. So it’s time to battle for supremacy at the political level. How? Read on… Amitabh Bachchan has favoured the Samajwadi Party for a while now, and his friendship with it’s leader Amar Singh is well known. This friendship and political alliance is no way healthy for the Congress Party and it’s leader Sonia Gandhi. Why does the biggest name in India have to support the opposition and not them? And what can they do to level the scales? Simple and easy, just sign up the next biggest name in India, and get him to campaign for your party. Sonia Gandhi has approached Shah Rukh Khan asking him to join the Congress Party. The Khan was reluctant at first, but when Sonia explained to him about Amitabh Bachchan and his Samjwadi Party alliance, the star of K3G agreed instantly. What poor Shah Rukh doesn’t know is that he is just being used as a pawn in the real battle, which is between Sonia Gandhi and Amitabh Bachchan. Our sources have indicated that Shah Rukh is all set to join Congress and the news will be made public very soon making King Khan now King Cong! ---- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Rape capitals of India: Mumbai police rapes girl on marine drive0 commentsThe Rape Capitals of India Mumbai cop rapes girl on Marine DriveThe government wants to keep couples from any demonstrations of affection on Marine Drive, Mumbai. The preferred tool - Mumbai police. One such keeper of morality rapes a girl right there, in the police chowki.![]() Krishna Kujmar Tiwari who was one of the walkers heard the screams of the girl coming from inside the wooden structure, and with the help of other passersby, rescued her. The half naked and drunk cop inside - Sunil Atmaram More - came out and challenged them saying that he was with the Mumbai police, and nobody could do anything to him. It seems that the guardian of the law - we don't know if Sunil Atmaram More was on duty when he raped the girl - approached the girl who was with three of her male friends, and asked them why they were loitering around there. Then he called the girl into the chowki for questioning, asked her friends to wait outside, and locked the door. When the passersby opened the door, they found a half naked more inside, and the girl told them that he had raped her. The police arrived soon after, and took the girl and the cop away. An angry crowd that had gathered tore apart the police chowki on Marine Drive. Constable Sunil Atmaram More has been charged with Sections 376 and 342 of the Indian Penal Code for rape and wrongful confinement. The girl seemed to be in a state of shock, and anyone not sure if the Mumbai cop raped her in the 'legal' sense of the term. Commissioner A N Roy said: "Our first priority is to ensure that legal procedures are correctly followed to ensure the case results in a conviction." Who gets raped?Rapes happen across the social strata in India. In the Indian villages, it is the poor villager's wife or sister or daughter who gets raped by another poor rowdy villager, and everyone from the local thanedar to the landlord. These rapes, unless the news becomes public due to unavoidable reasons, are never reported. It is reported in the newspapers or reaches the police only when a rape becomes part of a larger caste battle, family feud or political game. We do not hear about the massive number of them happening all the time. The media will report a rape only when it is a different kind of rape - a 'normal' rape is not news. The police, even when they get to know of a rape, or even when a rape victim approaches them, almost always discourages the family from filing a complaint. Often they are threatened, if the alleged rapist is someone in a powerful position. Some other times, the police reminds the victim's family of the social repercussions and attention (and permanent social humiliation, no marriages for anyone else in the family etc. etc) and the victim returns home to wash away all evidence of the crime. Everyone from little girls - six month old children's rapes are becoming routine now - to grandmothers are raped. Age is no barrier. Class is no barrier either. The rich, the educated, woman has no safety either. These are the rapes we notice. Because often, the rape becomes public in some unexpected way. Even these rapes are hushed up - and the victim herself in this case pretty well understands the consequences of outing the criminal. Family and acquaintances are often rapists - fathers, uncles, cousins. These are almost always treated as a matter of family honour and token punishment (the rapist may get slapped or sent out of town) is meted out to the rapist. In rapes that occur in Indian families, the males and females are equally to blame as everyone supports each other and the rapist for the sake of family honour. It is only the rape victim who has no chance of justice. In a cruel way, this often forces the rape victim to accept rape as an unfortunate occasional occurance within all families, and she herself may acquiesce in hushing up another rape tomorrow. Why do women get raped? Why do men rape?Do we get psychological here or sociological? Some women get raped because some men want to rape. Let us try to see if there is a way in which we can generalise the type of women who gets raped and type of man who rapes. Now, do not get all hot and bothered - I said 'try'. Rape has always been a part of human history. Almost all cultures have a history of rape. During all wars, the winning army ravaged the women of the loser. If we look back at known human history, we see a history of male superiority and aggressive behavior. Till the recent past, a rapist was not even 'publicly' looked down upon. Worldwide, in all cultures, mythologicals are full of rapes, attempted rapes, abductions, molestations. True, there were always those who looked down upon rape. But it is only with the more or less wide acceptance of human rights, modern values and laws that rape was uniformly condemned. So dark fact 1: Rape was the norm, rather than the exception. 2: All societies condemned rape when it was perpetrated on its own women, and encouraged or closed their eyes to it when it was perpetrated on their enemy's women. (example: Pakistanis do not believe and are enraged if you dare suggest to them that Muslims raped Hindu women during the partition trauma. Hindus are similarly furious if you accuse their community of rapes of Muslim women.) ![]() Why don't women report rapes to the police?Haha. Rape is physically and mentally traumatic for victims. (I have one male friend who argues it shouldn't be - he says one should treat it as just another physical assault.) Now, let us focus here on the situation in India. One: Honour. Often family honour, as rapists are often known to the victim or are often a family member/ relative. So the matter is hushed up. Two: Police. Police is the reason. Have you ever taken a good look at the average Indian policeman? have you ever been to a police station? A police station is an intimidating place. The cultural sophistication of the average policeman in India is pretty much that of the average roadside thug. Your average policeman hardly knows how to talk politely, is barely educated, is uncouth, brash and rude. Is this the paragon of sensitivity a victim of rape will run to? Add to this the rising number of custodial rapes which every one knows about. People will turn to a policeman only when they are desperate. Educated, rich people are abused by the police in India routinely and they have to call upon their networks and call upon little netas to get the policemen to treat them with some consideration. Expect a policeman to humiliate a rape victim, turn her back, discourage her, be foul-mouthed or maybe rape her in turn. The last may happen very rarely, but it is generally accepted in India that the Indian policeman is a rowdy who has the law to back him. The better off IPS and higher ranks of policemen are often double-faced. In their parties or social circles, they are the paragons of virtue while when in their element, they are as dangerous as the rest of their lower rung colleagues. (There are real reasons why the Indian policeman is a shame to the country. Many of them are of the society's own making. I will write about it in the near future.) Even if a rape victim passes this hurdle, what remains is the great Indian judicial system. The system offers the perfect means for an accused rapist to wear out the victim. Murder trials last for decades in India. Often, verdicts are produced only after the deaths of the accused or complainant. Just what is the point of filing a case when everything - society, family, police, legal seems to throw hurdles in your path? Isn't it normal for someone to just want to try and forget the rape and get on with it? -- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Vemma: Discover India’s #1 New Moneymaking Opportunity! Act Now!1 comments

A woman was beaten and stripped in a village in Andhra Pradesh on Friday after being accused of murdering her husband.
A mob in Jalli village in Warangal district accused the woman, Aaliya, of killing her husband because she had an affair with another man. They also accused her of murdering her lover’s wife. Men and women kicked Aaliya, tore at her hair and then stripped her as other people cheered the mob and hurled abuses. Police rescued Aaliya and sent her to a hospital after registering a complaint against the villagers. This is the third major case of vigilantism and mob justice in Andhra Pradesh since December 2007. A nurse working in an unauthorised nursing home in Rudrangi village of Karimnagar district was beaten up after a pregnant woman under her care died. The same month in Karimnagar, a mob tied a man to a crane and hung him upside down over a well after accusing him of theft. ----- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Video: Super Star RajiniKanth in Sultan, music by ARR0 comments
Tamil Nadu's superstar is going to be seen in a new avtaar. Rajinikanth is starring in an animation film Sultan, where he features as a mythological, larger-than-life warrior.
The movie is being directed by his daughter, Soundarya Rajinikanth at Chennai's Ocher Studios. While the film is targeted at both adults and children, Soundarya says making the film though is no child's play. "Animating a live-action hero is not easy at all because you have to get the size precise and even facial features like the eyes and the nose precise. I had to take my father to Brussels for a body scan and it's all come out well. So what you are seeing now is my dad in animation," says Soundarya. Sultan will be made in 12 languages including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, English and Japanese, and the budget is expected to touch the $10 million mark. Another USP of the film is its music, a job that has been entrusted to A R Rahman. "The background score is very, very important for an animation. It's the backbone of the film. The film's got four full-length songs, so Rahman sir has taken a lot of effort and he's done a lot of homework on his own. We are very excited about the music," says Soundarya. The film will also have an English title song for which the search is on for an international singer. It is expected to hit theatres by the end of this year. "I hope the film reaches mainstream Hollywood. When you talk about a film like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, it's very authentic to it's background. Sultan is going to be an Indian film with international projection standards and international technical standards in it," says Soundarya. And as for the fans, Soundarya thinks they will be as excited to see her father in another avtaar as she is directing him. Shah Rukh Khan has certainly lived up to his title. Two superhit films Chak De! Indiaand Om Shanti Om and his newly acquired six-pack abs have ensured that the year 2007 belonged to him. No wonder then, that he bagged the Glam Personality of the Year Award at the Reebok Zoom Glam Awards 2008. SRK’s always been associated with style and panache – someone who doesn’t follow fashion trends but makes a fashion statement. The ‘cool’ neckpiece became even cooler when he wore it in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and his ponytail look and six-pack abs are still making news. What makes it even more endearing is that even after all this, the actor is too modest to accept being called ‘glamourous’, which is why he thinks people around him are more glamourous than him! While accepting the award he said, “If you have personal style, whatever you wear will look stylish.” Modesty, that’s surely SRK’s middle name! Latest report suggested that the doctor has been sent to judicial custody till January 18. Dr Vijay Sharma, a well-known figure among Mumbai’s celebrities, allegedly asked the reporter to visit his clinic so that he could give her information on a surgical treatment. The reporter was working on a story on cosmetic surgeries and had contacted Sharma some days ago. "Sharma, who has two dispensaries, called her at his clinic in Khar this morning and gave the necessary details to the girl. When she went ahead to thank him by shaking hands, he kissed her," an unnamed senior police officer of the Khar police station told PTI. A cameraperson accompanying the girl was standing outside the consulting room when the incident occurred. Sharma also passed lewd remarks at the reporter, the officer said. After the reporter fled from the clinic, Sharma allegedly called her on her phone and warned her to keep quiet and she he was a very "influential" person. The reporter’s lawyer, Phalguni Bramhbhat, alleged that Sharma threatened the woman with a surgical instrument and threatened to malign her if she complained against him. A complaint was filed with the Khar police station immediately and Sharma was arrested under Sections 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. ---- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Video: Supreme court banned tradinal bull sport "Jallikattu" , now Taminadu Govt challenges SC to conduct the Pongal festival's jallikattu0 commentsBarely hours after the Supreme Court banned the conduct of 'Jallikattu' (bull taming), villagers at Soorakkudi near Singampunari in Sivaganga district, conducted the village sport, as part of a local religious festival. While Delhi is fast gaining the dubious distinction as a hub of underage prostitution racket, the trail begins in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Nepal. Minor girls are being pimped as "virgins" for huge prices to customers from across India and while the experts say the alarming trend is common to most metro cities, Delhi's reputation seems to have taken the severest beating. A CNN-IBN Special Investigation Team went undercover, posing as customers, traveled with pimps from Delhi to Kolkata and caught child traffickers putting young minor girls on sale without a care for the law.
EXPOSED! Minor girls being pimped as 'virgins' are being sold to customers from across India. The journey began in Delhi. Delhi: Not a virgin territory The first girl on offer was Payal (name changed), a underage girl being touted by a pimp called Mukesh at a shop in south Delhi. Mukesh regularly “supplies” underage, virgin girls to customers in Delhi. Their “going rates” are on his fingertips. Given below is an excerpt from a conversation CNN-IBN had with Mukesh. Mukesh: Uska bahut mota paisa lagega. (Payal will be very expensive) CNN-IBN: Kitna lagega? (How much?) Mukesh: Kam se kam 80-90 hazar rupay lagega. (At least Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000.) A week later, Rahul, Mukesh's right hand man got Payal to meet the SIT team again and repeatedly assured that she was a minor. Rahul: (I assure you she is young, but you should be the only one having intercourse with her, otherwise there’ll be trouble and I will be in trouble.) CNN-IBN: Khoon nikelaga? (Will she bleed?) Rahul: Haan. Nahi niklega toh paisey ley jao. Rs 1000 de dena. (Yes. She will. If she does not, you’ll get your money back. Just pay us Rs 1,000 in that case.) Kolkata: A naked truth emerges To see how deep the rot ran, the SIT asked Mukesh and Rahul to introduce them to more underage girls in a group. An excerpt from the conversation: CNN-IBN: Mujhe 5 ya 6 ek saath dikhao! Ek jagah par dekh saku jahan main. (Show me five or six girls together) CNN-IBN (Reporter 2 to pimps): Choose karne ke liye bol raha hai bhai. (He wants to choose). Mukesh: Dekho ye alag-alag hoti hai kahi-kahi jagah par, aur hame dhund ke lana parte hai. Tata said, “I observed families riding on two-wheelers – the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors’ engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal. Today, we indeed have a People’s Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions. We are happy to present the People’s Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility.”Specifications and features of 1 lakh car Nano: Stylish, comfortable The People’s Car, designed with a family in mind, has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. It can comfortably seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make ingress and egress easy. Yet with a length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance, it can effortlessly manoeuvre on busy roads in cities as well as in rural areas. Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and manoeuvrability, which will set a new benchmark among small cars. When launched, the car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual’s preferences. Fuel-efficient engine The People’s Car has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft. The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency. Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system. Meets all safety requirements The People’s Car’s safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body. Tubeless tyres further enhance safety. Environment-friendly The People’s Car’s tailpipe emission performance exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelers being manufactured in India today. The high fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint. (For more information: www.tatapeoplescar.com ) Nano, the world's cheapest car, is expected to be commercially launched in the second half of 2008. The 1 lakh car was a major concern for the environmentalists and other who raised concern about the pollution and concession caused by the car if it was wide accepted in the market. The target audience of the car is basically two wheeler buyers who would like to own a car and also second hand small car buyers. Mr Tata refuted these claims and said that the car would be least polluting and as far as congestion is concerned, something that needs to be acted upon is the infrastructure. Stopping someone from making a car that would be affordable to common people nation wide is not an answer. The car if successful will definitely revolutionize the four wheeler segment in the country and around the world. Reactions to the TATA NANO:- JAGDISH KHATTAR, FORMER MANAGING DIRECTOR, MARUTI SUZUKI: "The car is good to look at. There is a space in the market between two-wheelers and the 800 (Maruti's small car). It will be a success if they deliver what they promised. And I see no reason why they can't."SHINZO NAKANISHI, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MARUTI SUZUKI INDIA LTD: "We cannot make a cheaper car. We don't know how to make a 1-lakh car unless we sacrifice something. We won't go below the 800 in our product line-up."At the Auto Expo’s Tata booth, housewife Simmi Sahani said the vehicle looked attractive at first glimpse. Sahani, whose hotelier husband already owns two cars, said she wouldn’t mind buying the Nano for her daughter. “She’s 16 now and learning driving. I’d like her to drive to school and later college.” But she wouldn’t want to take the vehicle out for long drives. “We’ll use the Nano for trips to the market or other places nearby, instead of a scooter.”ANAND MAHINDRA, MANAGING DIRECTOR, MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA LTD ): "I think it's a moment of history and I'm delighted an Indian company is leading the way." VENU SRINIVASAN, CHAIRMAN & MANAGING DIRECTOR, TVS MOTOR CO: "It is fantastic, outstanding engineering. It helps redefine the sector in the country. It has established new grounds." P. SAM, GROUP HEAD, MARKETING AND SALES, YAMAHA MOTOR INDIA SALES PVT LTD: "The 1-lakh rupee car is not going to impact our potential customers. Our customers would buy our products for the sheer joy of riding." ![]() Here are some of the specs that have been revealed so far (all relative to the smallest car as of today, Maruti 800) 25% more room space than Maruti 800. 7% lesser by length than Maruti 800. 20 KMPL mileage (this should send folks running to TATA showrooms) Has passed the front and rear crash tests. confirms to all international emission standards (EURO II/III etc). -- Donate Food for Needy Indians: World Cheapest Car in India Tata launching on Jan 10 2008 - 1 lakh car / 2500$0 commentsRatan Tata India's giant Tata Group will this Thursday unveil the world's cheapest car, which analysts say could revolutionise prices worldwide. Ratan Tata, the reclusive tycoon who heads the tea-to-steel conglomerate, will kick off an auto show here with the unveiling of the long-awaited "People's Car", which will carry a sticker price of 100,000 rupees or 2,500 dollars. The cheap car is a pet project of the Cornell-trained architect Ratan Tata, who helped design it, and is aimed at getting Indian families off their motorbikes and into cars. Ratan Tata, 70, has spearheaded the growth strategy of the company known for its philanthropic values. "I hope to make a contribution to making life safer for them (the masses)," he said on its web site. Small cars are expected to dominate the biennial auto show, which has become one of Asia's largest and is expected to draw 1.5 million visitors, up from one million in 2006, organisers say. "India's auto industry has found a new confidence -- the show can be seen as the automotive industry coming of age," said Ravi Kant, president of the Society of Indian Automobiles (Siam). Domestic and international carmakers have been in a race to corner India's small car market, which accounts for over two-thirds of domestic sales in the country of 1.1 billion people. Small car sales are expected to nearly double to around two million units by 2010 as India's population becomes more affluent and trades up from motorcycles to cars. The eight-day show features automakers from around the world from Honda, Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen to luxury carmakers like BMW and Daimler, which are reaching out to India's new free-spending wealthy in an economy growing by nine percent. India's automotive industry, which produces 1.5 million vehicles annually, is worth 34 billion dollars a year and contributes five percent of the country's gross domestic product. An Indian government mission plan aims for automotive sales to more than quadruple to 145 billion dollars by 2016, and for indirect and direct auto sector employment to grow to 25 million from 13 million today. The new car to be unveiled by the Tatas could "revolutionise car costs downward," said leading Indian car analyst Murad Ali Baig. "This car is bound to be followed by other low-cost ones." "A lot of people just want a car that takes them from home to the market, they don't want something fancy or they want something small as a second car," he told AFP. Indian motorcycle maker Bajaj and France's Renault are looking at making a 3,000 dollar car for the Indian market that would get 34 kilometers (21 miles) per litre of fuel. Tata has said it is targeting its car at Indian and other emerging markets. The car would cost about half the price of its nearest rival in the Indian market made by Japanese-owned Maruti Suzuki that sells for 4,800 dollars. A Tata Motors board member said the car would get 25 kilometres per litre of fuel. Tata has said it believes it could eventually sell one million "People's Cars" annually. Tata, which has been on an aggressive overseas expansion drive, is also expected to win its reported two-billion-dollar bid for the British Land Rover and Jaguar brands in January -- which would put it in the unusual position of making two prestige cars as well as the world's lowest-cost automobile. Environmentalists see clouds on the horizon if the cheap car is a winner, fearing it will further congest India's clogged roads and add to choking pollution. But Tata says the car will create no more pollution than a motorbike. India's car market is a huge draw because car penetration is just seven per 1,000 people compared to 550 per 1,000 in such countries as Germany or 476 in France, said Dilip Chenoy, Siam director general. ---- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Harris Jeyaraj Exclusive BGMs and mp3 bits - May use as ringtones also - Direct download Free !!6 comments
ENJOY!!!! Koena Mitra was molested in New Year Party 20080 comments“The man misbehaved with me hence the hotel authorities asked him to leave the premises," says Mitra. A male guest was pestering Koena not once but thrice. Since Koena did not respond to his repetitive efforts, he made things worse for the actress. Initially, he wanted to show her the features on his cell phone, then enquired her email id and then finally he clutched her by the waist and pulled her closer. She struck back by pushing him and punching his neck. “I certainly do not want to make it an issue and I am not comfortable discussing this," adds Koena. -- Donate Food for Needy Indians: Directoy Shankar's next film is with Super star Rajini as ROBOT (Tamil)0 comments
